What to Expect in Your First Judo Class
Starting something new can be exciting—but also a little nerve-wracking. If you’ve been searching for beginner Judo classes or wondering what to expect in Judo, you’ve come to the right place.
At Torrent Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Hanover, Massachusetts, we welcome students of all experience levels and make sure your first step onto the mat is a positive one. Whether you’re looking for a new hobby, a great workout, or a way to challenge yourself, our Judo program is a safe, structured, and supportive place to begin.
What to Wear to Your First Class
You don’t need to have a Judo gi (uniform) before your first class. Just wear comfortable athletic clothing—something like a fitted t-shirt or long sleeve and athletic pants without buttons or zippers.
Training is done barefoot on padded mats, so leave your shoes off once you’re on the mat. Bring a water bottle and a willingness to learn—that’s all you need.
The Warm-Up
Each class starts with a short warm-up to prepare your body for movement. This usually includes light cardio, joint mobility, and some Judo-specific movements such as rolls or ukemi—how to fall safely. Don’t worry if it’s your first time doing these. Our instructors explain everything clearly and patiently, and you’ll never be pressured to do something you’re not ready for.
Judo Etiquette and Atmosphere
Judo is a martial art based on respect, discipline, and mutual learning. You’ll see students bow when stepping onto the mat or before practicing with a partner. This isn’t about formality—it’s a way to show respect for your training partners and for the art itself.
The culture at Torrent BJJ is friendly, welcoming, and ego-free. Everyone remembers what it’s like to be new, and our community is here to help you feel comfortable and supported from day one.
What Techniques You’ll Learn
In your first few classes, you’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of Judo, including:
Ukemi (breakfalls): How to fall without getting hurt
Kuzushi (balance breaking): Learning to disrupt your partner’s balance
Basic throws: Like Ogoshi (hip throw) or Osoto Gari (outer leg sweep)
Posture and movement: How to move safely and effectively on the mat
Grip work and control: The foundations of engaging with a training partner
Techniques are taught in a step-by-step format, and you’ll be paired with partners who help you learn at your own pace.
A Safe, Supportive Training Environment
Safety is one of our top priorities. We make sure that all training is closely supervised and that students work together with mutual respect. Whether you’re completely new to martial arts or returning after time away, you’ll be guided in a way that’s encouraging and appropriate for your level.
Our Judo program is designed with beginners in mind, so there’s no pressure to perform—only the encouragement to keep learning.
